Project Description
Sexual health is an important part of a person’s overall well-being. It supports healthy relationships, trust, and emotional connection. However, many professionals feel uncomfortable or unprepared to talk about sexual health, especially with people who have disabilities or are part of the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, these individuals often do not get the support or education they need and may be at greater risk of harm. This research project focuses on understanding the sexual health experiences and needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and/or LGBTQ+ individuals. Student apprentices will assist the research team by helping to analyze interview data. They will also support writing up the findings and be involved in the process of preparing articles for publication in academic journals.
Technology or Computational Component
A key component of the research is the use of technology to manage and analyze interview data. Students will be involved in the transcription of audio-recorded interviews. In addition, they will be trained in qualitative data analysis software (such as Atlas.ti or Dedoose) to assist with organizing, coding, and interpreting the data. This hands-on experience will give students valuable skills in using digital tools for qualitative research and in understanding how technology supports the research process from raw data to final analysis.
