Projects

Project Description

Are you curious about how students like you are using ChatGPT or other AI tools in their learning? This project invites undergraduate researchers to explore how engineering students use generative AI tools to support their learning of technical content and skills. You will help design and distribute a survey, conduct interviews, and analyze the results to understand patterns, challenges, and perceptions of AI use in engineering education. This work will contribute to better understanding how AI tools are changing engineering student learning—and how instructors and institutions can better support students.

Technology or Computational Component

This project involves both quantitative and qualitative data analysis using technological tools. You will: • Use online survey platforms (e.g., Google Forms or Qualtrics) to collect data. • Use basic statistical software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, or R) to analyze survey responses. • Use qualitative analysis tools (e.g., NVivo or manual coding in Word/Excel) to examine interview transcripts. • Optionally explore behavior-based data or screen recordings to analyze how students actually use AI tools when studying. The student researcher(s) will be guided through each step and will gain hands-on experience with data collection and analysis software.
