Projects

Project Description

Music visualization, either sound-based or notation-based, may be used to display information about a specific performance, and to examine compositional structures. This project aims at building visualization tools for displaying musical structures starting from notation, score, or audio. Pitch, rhythm and timbre can be extracted and visualized by algorithmic graphics modeling, using illumination, geometry, and topology of models.

Technology or Computational Component

The overall goal of this project is to provide a visual feedback on selected stylistic aspects in music. The resulting system needs to analyze the incoming symbolic data stream, extract from it meaningful metrics in real time, and generate a quantitative display of distances in the space of such metrics. Students will review existing literature on the subject, and test implementing specific features in applications built for standard platforms such as iOS.
