Norman Su (School of Informatics, Computing, & Engineering)
Facebook groups are now one of the most popular ways to host online communities across a variety of topics. This research will investigate how Facebook groups and their members moderate discussions on controversial topics. Students will gain skills collecting and analyzing Facebook data through both quantitative (e.g., data science, natural language processing) and qualitative analysis (e.g., content analysis). The focus of this project will be on controversies regarding food diets and recipes, particularly from a cultural perspective.
Technology or Computational Component
Students will be taught to use the R programming language to analyze data from Facebook. Students will also gain experience doing qualitative analysis of social media data.
